On this day in 1756, France declares war on England in what was known locally as the French and Indian War; in 1775, Canadian Governor General Guy Carleton proclaims martial law and calls out militia to augment 800 British regular troops, suspends administration of the Québec Act to meet the American invasion; in 1840, Samuel Bushee, an American War of Independence veteran from Connecticut and settled in what is now the Marshall House in Saratoga passed away; in 1864, the Battle of Cold Harbor ended with the the 77th New York losing 12 men killed or wounded, it was one of the final battles of Union Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant’s Overland Campaign during the American Civil War, and is remembered as one of American history’s bloodiest, most lopsided battles; in 1897, the riding of bicycles were prohibited on village sidewalks; in 1902, the Liberty Wall Paper Co stockholders met; in 1923, James McLindon opened his newly appointed store in the former E. J. Hughes cigar store on Broad Street today and Miss Marion Hughes, a member of the graduating class at Russell Sage College, Troy has arrived home for the summer vacation; and in 1994 the USS Saratoga finished the Iles D’Or, or “Islands of Gold,” — an exercise with the French Navy and the USS Saratoga, the Navy’s oldest active duty carrier, then headed for the rendezvous point with her relief, the nuclear powered aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN-73), the Navy’s newest carrier at the time.
