On this day in 1646, Father Issac Joques passed through Saratoga on his third and final trip to the Mohawk country; in 1752, the original contract of division of the Saratoga Patent with a map was executed; in 1775, the Continental Congress resolves that “no further expedition or incursion ought to be made… against or into Canada;” in 1776, Congress agrees to raise 6,000 militia “to reinforce the army in Canada, and to keep up communication with that province; ” in 1779, British General Sir Henry Clinton begins his upstate New York offensive up the Hudson River acting on information provided by Benedict Arnold; Clinton captures Verplanck’s Point and the still uncompleted fort at Stony Point; the court-martial of Benedict Arnold convenes in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on charges with 13 counts of misbehavior, including misusing government wagons and illegally buying and selling goods; Arnold’s resentment over this and the perceived mistreatment by the American Army would fuel his traitorous decision; in 1864, the Battle of Cold Harbor started and was fought to June 12, 1864, this was one of the final battles of Union Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant’s Overland Campaign during the American Civil War, and is remembered as one of American history’s bloodiest, most lopsided battles where thousands of Union soldiers were killed or wounded in a hopeless frontal assault against the fortified positions of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee’s army with the 77th New York Regiment losing 5 men killed or mortally wounded and 7 men wounded, in 1868, the St. Stephen’s Church cornerstone was laid; in 1994, Fr. LeMoyne retired from Notre-Dame Visitation church; and in 2002, the former Empress Motel was purchased and renovated by James Miers then renamed Old Saratoga Motor Inn.
