On the day

On this day in 1756, General James Abercromby wrote to Lord Loudon, which states that “Fort Miller is a Small Stockade open to the river, situate on unwholesome ground… it does not appear to me necessary to have this Fort Garrisoned, as so little is gained by small Portages, as much time is lost loading and unloading, as the Wagons might proceed to Fort Edward with their loads” and in 1777, British Lieutenant William Digby of 53d Regiment of Foot describes “Fort Anne is a place of no great strength having only a block house which though strong against small arms is not proof against cannon.“
