On this day in 1863, the 77th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment had Colonel McKean resigned his commission due to illness and Lieutenant Colonel French was promoted to colonel and command of the regiment; in 1885, President Ulysses S. Grant died of throat cancer at the cottage at Mt. McGregor and in 1997, Countess Diana won the Schuylerville Stakes for trainer Patrick B. Byrne and ridden by jockey, Shane J. Sellers.
