On this day

On this day in 1758, began of the Battle of Fort Carillon (Ticonderoga) Montcalm’s soldiers resist the attack of British General James Abercrombie; in 1777, Hessians and the British under command of German General Friedrich von Riedesel and British General Simon Fraser defeat the retreating Americans at Hubbardton, Vermont and the Battle of Fort Anne began where the remnants of the Continental forces retreating from Fort Ticonderoga and Skenesborough along with members of the Albany Militia engaged the British 9th Regiment of Foot on what is now known as Battle Hill outside of the village of Fort Ann; in 1877, John Jeffords swore a statement that said “I have seen breastworks said to have been thrown up by or under the direction of Burgoyne for shelter to his army from the enemy, General Gates. The greatest piece of breastwork that I have seen was on the hill where the new cemetery now is, which were from five to seven feet high… General Burgoyne’s headquarters were a little southwest of the place where now is Prospect Hill cemetery”; and in 1942, the USS Saratoga sailed for the southwest Pacific.
