On this day in 1747, Saratoga’s Fort Clinton resisted attacks by French & Indians in what is known as the Fourth Battle of Saratoga where French officer La Come St-Luc (who would also take part in the massacre at Fort William Henry and with British General Burgoyne in 1777) with 125 French Militia and Regular troops and 79 Indians would attack 300-400 English troops; in 1776, American Loyalist John Johnson arrived at Montreal with 200 followers from the Mohawk Valley and American General John Sullivan retreats to St. John’s with the American army of invasion; in 1778, crippled from his wounds at Saratoga, Benedict Arnold was placed in command of Philadelphia, PA where he socialized with families of loyalist sympathies and lived extravagantly; in 1787, Alexander Hamilton (Schuyler’s son in law) proposes constitutional plan which supports a strong central government and a President for life; in 1804, there was a start of extensive communication by correspondence took place between Alexander Hamilton, Aaron Burr, and their appointed seconds in an attempt to resolve the confrontation initiated by Burr’s reaction to Hamilton’s statement that appeared in the Albany Register; in 1812, President James Madison asks Congress to declare war on Britain; blames British seizure of American vessels and sailors in the Napoleonic Wars, and British support of native resistance to US westward expansion, the U.S. entered the war with ambitious plans to conquer Canada, a goal that was never realized; in 1815, the Anglo-Allied army under the command of the Duke of Wellington combined with a Prussian army defeat Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo and end his rule as Emperor of the French and his Hundred Days’ return from exile; in 1816, the first Thanksgiving Day is celebrated in Upper Canada: for deliverance from Americans in the War of 1812 and in 1873, Susan B. Anthony (who grew up along the Battenkill in neighboring Greenwich) was fined $100 for attempting to vote for President. .
