On this day in 1775, the New York Provincial Congress assumes functions of government and American troops under Benedict Arnold take St. John’s, Canada; in 1944, the USS Saratoga joined the British Royal Navy Eastern Fleet in the Indian Ocean and struck Soerabaja, Java with her aircraft contributing significantly to the success of the mission; in 1952, the Schuylerville observation post went on full operation; in 1968, on Armed Forces Day, the USS Saratoga was the host ship for President Richard M. Nixon during the firepower demonstration conducted by Carrier Air Wing Three in the Virginia Capes area; in 1971, spring clean-up week in village of Schuylerville began; in 1987, in the Persian Gulf the American guided missile frigate USS Stark (named after the General that fought in Saratoga during the French and Indian War and American War of Independence including commanding the Northern Army from Saratoga during the late stages of the war) is struck by 2 Exocet missiles fired by an Iraqi aircraft; only one detonates, but 37 sailors are killed and 21 are wounded; and in 2004, Schuylerville students put planters they made throughout the village.
